many things written in the Bible have arisen from a scientific basis, i believe. only that people of those days weren't that advanced in the sciences... and they thought that what we now attribute to unhygenic practices were punishments from God. well i think it worked more in the line of... God warning them against doing something, for that something would cause them harm... people made it into a law... and when something bad happened to them when they broke the law, they intepreted it as punishment from God, when it wasn't really 'punishment'. i dunno... maybe it was so...

it's a Hebrew law that forbids the eating of the flesh of an 'unclean' animal - 'unclean' because very often, undercooked meats of these animals, esp pigs, contained roundworm parasites (Trichinella spiralis) and tapeworms (Taenia solium) which cause diseases in the humans who ate them. indeed, another sacred Jewish book (the Talmud) written in AD 390 warns of cysts caused in humans by the tapeworms found in animals.

the famous Fiery Serpent mentioned in the Bible and the traditional symbol of medicine... the 'Staff of Asclepius', with a serpent coiled around a staff, have their origins in the nematode roundworm (Dracunculus medinensis). this worm infected humans and crawled under their skin, and often caused great illnesses. treatment involved puncturing the skin where the worm was found, and removing the worm by winding it around a stick. in the Bible, Numbers 21:6-9, Moses was directed by God to 'make a serpent of brass and put it upon a pole' and whoever 'beheld the serpent of brass, he lived'.

it's science made dramatic and utilised to further the authority of religions. :P
